ESZTERGOMI GREEN WALKING PROJECT

The "Green Walk of Esztergom" project is divided into sub-tasks, ensuring consistency between the plans at the connection points of the individual planning documents. Our office has designed the following sub-tasks:

Green areas of the Little Danube promenade (in a separate project)

Creation of a green recreation park on Primate's Island

The green area, with a significant tree population, was transformed into a usable and attractive public park by building new paving, fencing and structures (boathouse and water block, bandstand), new street furniture, playground and fitness equipment, lighting and revegetation.

Creation of a community garden next to St Stephen's Chapel

We have designed a compact garden on a human scale in a previously neglected area, which will become a pleasant place to relax, play and walk. The garden is divided into two main areas for use: a lawn area for outdoor play and picnics, and a paved communal space with benches, seating walls and ornamental flower beds.

Petőfi Sándor Street, recreation park, Babits statue

A representative space for the Babits statue will be created between the two bordering streets. We have designed a seating support wall to highlight the statue and an ornamental shrubbery behind the support wall.

BUDAPEST, SOUTH-BUDA CENTRAL HOSPITAL

The area designated for the South Buda Central Hospital is currently undeveloped and adjacent to a single-family residential zone.

The planned infrastructural developments, in particular the construction of the two transport interchanges and the 2x2 lane connecting road, and in the longer term the connection with the Mouse Road and the planned Galvani Bridge, represent a large-scale urban intervention that will radically change the future environment of the DBC.

In the design of the hospital's surroundings, it is essential to counteract the disturbing effects of the motorway and the Balaton road. To this end, the landscaping and afforestation planned on the boundaries of the area will significantly reduce the noise and dust generated by traffic.

A representative square with a water feature and paved surfaces of a size to cater for the significant pedestrian and waiting traffic will be located in front of the main entrance of the complex on Dobogó Street. The façade plane is visually accentuated by an ornamental cherry tree with intensive flowering. Between the access road and the building, the hospital garden is created, a terraced garden area for strolling and relaxing.

The entire roof surface is designed as an extensive or intensive roof garden. It will house the playground of the hospital nursery and crèche, and an active recreational garden area on the same level.

The basic requirement for the garden design is that the majority of the pedestrian paths should be accessible. The entrance area will have an intensive design and the side and rear green areas will have an ecological appearance.

BUDAPEST, HALLER GARDENS

The garden is divided into three parts (gardens A, B and C). Our concept was inspired by the story of János Haller: Hármas historia. Each of its three  chapters define the atmosphere of each garden, while quotes from the book also materialize on selected surfaces. Based on this, garden A is the garden of conquest, emphasized by rustic rock formations within the lush vegetation, misting systems that provide a misterious, cooling environment. Garden B is a garden of surprises. Visitors can discover colorful perennial beds and different kinds of playful and lounge furniture within the large community area that can be adapted for smaller or larger gatherings. The shielded arrangement of Garden C is ideal for smaller, more intimate conversations and meetings within the grass surfaces.

To achieve a true myhive effect, the logo appears in a variety of shapes, while custom furniture lends an exciting atmosphere to the garden. To improve the microclimate, water appears in several locations in the garden in the form of water pools and misting systems.  Due to spectacular yet elegant furnishings and the decorative seasonal vegetation, the garden provides an all year round visual experience.

MUSEUM QUARTER, VÁROSLIGET

Heinrich Nebbien german landscape architect's Városliget park – the park of the city – has been compared to such prestigious parks as London's Regent's Park, Munich's Englischer Garten, Berlin's Tiergarten, and New York's Central Park. According to Nebbien's  original intentions, the park is a venue for resting, meeting, teaching, education, parades, competitions, dance events and all kinds of entertainment. We would not expect anything different from Liget today.

While coming up with the conceptual design of the Museum Quarter, we could not overlook its historical past and the importance of the 200-year-old Városliget. Our main point of reference is the entrance motif conceived in 1813 - being the last surviving element of the original designs -, the Rondo. Rondo, a concentric circle, is the only geometric form of the park and therefore it is a transition between the rigid lines of the regular urban fabric and the scenic landscape of the inner park.

 Liget's new design must provide opportunities, plurality and heterogeneity, as by its character, a constantly changing and evolving public space. There are countless processes that shape the park; customs and habits of children, youth, parents, adults and the elderly. The park is to be accessible to everyone let them be 0-99 years old, individuals, families or groups: it therefore becomes a multifaceted intercultural space embracing many generations. Simultaneously changing and adapting, Liget surprises, inspires, renders curious, and educates.

MILLENÁRIS SZÉLLKAPU, BUDAPEST

As an extension to the 1st phase of Millenáris Park, we aimed to create a complementary space with functions still absent in the park or in its surroundings: - functions that target the local community. We have retained the existing hall buildings to match the previous phase and we came up with solutions that fit well with, and even make use of the possibilities such large open spaces provide.

We proposed the installation of indoor swimming pools and wellness features on the massive ground floor of building block M, since these facilities are currently unavailable in such proximity to any other intermodal node in Budapest. On the first floor we imagined the first community office of Buda, an incubator for the creative industry.

The park expansion becomes an integral part of the already complete unit in terms of style and design. We imagined a lake in front of block M, which generates captivating reflections in front of the glazed facade. Between block M and the Margit Boulevard, lawn surfaces rise towards the building, thus attenuating traffic noise of the boulevard. At the starting point of Millenáris Park's main axis, we designed a space where the dynamic sight of wind-driven flags always attracts the attention of passers-by, thus becoming a worthy gate, entrance to the park.

JUBILEE PARK, DABAS

For Dabas Jubilee Park, our approach was to create a verdant space of fundamentally recreational use. During the design process, we maintained the currently well-functioning surfaces while we also reflected on the potentials of the park. The ambience of the park simulates a landscape forest. We focused on preserving the natural atmosphere of the current site, while maintaining the width of the forest walkway.

The park was divided into five units according to functions. The large grassy meadow provides space for events and the horse riding area. Loose groups of trees have been planted in the meadow, while the remaining lawn surface can be used as a playground. The existing playground was reinvented, as new play furniture for larger age groups was added as an extension. In the vicinity of the Hundred Year-Old Tree, vegetation is revitalized; it is also our proposal to build an adventure track over time on the older trees. By ensuring the water supply of Lake Körtó and the cleaning of the riverbed, we created a cozy, attractive resting area that is connected to the island with a new bridge. The revitalization and rehabilitation of the herbaceous meadows, the installation of new trees results in a pleasant, well-groomed landscape. The area is exposed by a network of pedestrian footpaths equipped with benches and forest sports equipment.

CENTRAL PIAZZA, RÁKOSPALOTA

As part of our concept, the free-formed yet guided lines of the main square are gradually calmed as we arrive to the grand mass of the church. Behind the church, a sport promenade creates connection to the main square. Sculptures of renowned athletes placed alongside the promenade accompany the passer-by, as a reminder of past encounters, perseverance and successes.

The diagonal axis is represented by a walkway that leads to a gate, surrounded by an imposing arrangement of buildings. The natatorium and the sports center frame an inner outdoor piazza with several sports fields. There is a colonnade guiding the piazza along its 4th side, adjacent to the football pitch. The repetitive structure of the seating area contains toilets and kiosks, both indispensable elements of football stadiums. The VIP area can be optionally extended in the future, the shared lounge area opens directly from the sport piazza. The frame structure currently expands above the seating area, but can be extended or modified at any further phase of construction. The changing and maintenance rooms are located inside the stadium’s head building, which also houses a wellness-fitness center as part of a complex spatial network.

For the match to go undisturbed, the stadium has a solid façade on ground level, while the upper corridor – also serving as a viewing gallery – has a glazed one. The natatorium communicates with glazed walls to both sides, allowing an open view to the inner sports piazza and the outer park. The school is linked to this sports complex through a covered corridor. As it is not advised to block diagonal passage on ground level, this connecting corridor rises above – stands on its own feet shortly after exiting the building. Czabán Samu park is intensely linked to the functions of the sports complex - running tracks, extreme sports fields, climbing walls, trampolines, and pools are at the disposal of local sports enthusiasts.

The promenade linking the units of the sports complex ends by the corner of the church where the new community hall and playhouse are being constructed. This hall will provide space for residential discussions, and potentially become a landmark of local cooperation and unity.

Liget Budapest. There are several ways to interpret the project name, also defining expectations for the design:

Budapest’s ‘liget’ (translated to a loose woodland) is a meeting point, a space for sporting and recreation for the city of Budapest;

a woodland which is a distinguishing feature, an emblematic location of Budapest;

an open green surface scattered with forests and solitaire trees, an ecologically active and multifaceted area;

a park that can only be imagined in Budapest, a unique and remarkable tourist attraction.

These are the most important principles that emerged during the elaboration of our design:

• Városliget is a national heritage, a unique monumental park in need of restoration,

• the park is an ecologically active area, the lungs of the city with valuable woodland,

• the current tree stock is too thick, densely planted,

• it is necessary to create a spatial structure that harmonizes with the original concept of Nebbien,

Our design focus was on:

• implementing pedestrian and cycle-friendly interventions,

• merging and increasing the quality of functions,

• encouraging a variable and versatile use,

• considering and preserving the area’s natural and built values,

• providing accessibility to existing and planned buildings,

• installing transparent structures in line with the characteristics of the park,

• installing furniture reflective to the surrounding space.

MAIN SQUARE, PÉCS URÁNVÁROS

The site covers the broader settings of Ybl Miklós street and Szilárd Leó park. The main spatial layout of the area follows Nendvich Andor street along Ybl street to Szilárd Leó park. The space is constantly opening up, starting from the inner areas along the promenade to the renewed Uránbányász square. A more open, central space is created by the opening of spatial to reveal the buildings.

We slightly tilted the axis of Ybl Miklós street in order to widen the walkway into a promenade in front of deparment store ’Mecsek’ and the adjacent post office. This intervention allowed the Obelisque monument to the aviation heroes to be located on the axis line.

Along with new spatial structures we also added new functions that enhance the vitality of this setting. Instead of the former commercial functions, we proposed the establishment of outdoor terraces along the ground level buildings of Ybl Miklós street. We based our spatial concept on promoting pedestrian transit and community functions. We planted an allée of trees and established a walkway on both sides of Ybl Miklós street, Építők útja street and Uránbányász square. Along Esztergár Lajos street we left the existing plants on level with elevated planting beds and laid street paving similar to the one on the promenade. The structure of Uránbányász square is determined by pedestrian transit, this concept is enhanced with targeted paving architecture design.  The busiestpedestrian routes meet at the intersection of Esztergár Lajos utca and the post office building, therefore we lef this space open. The promenade begins at this buildings and continues towards the high-rise on the opposite side. The promenade’s water features give a vertical connection between the two units.

The spatial design of Frankel Leó park follows the same principle of arrangement, however, it dissolves the geometric shapes into larger green spaces and softens the built elements. The sculpture garden in the optical center of the park becomes an interactive space for meetings, leisure, exhibits or play, with geometrically-patterned seating walls, statues and shaped trees.
